Amarnath Temple/Cave sits at breathtaking altitude of 3,888 m in Himalayan mountains and is approximately 141 km from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. Amarnath Temple houses an ice lingam which represent Lord Shiva, it is one of the holiest sites in Hinduism. The cave presents two more ice lingams which depict Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha. During the month of June to August, an ice formation, this ice formation is called the Shiva lingam, which is formed inside the cave that slowly melts down with the moon’s cycle.

As per the rules, of SASB visitors must have a registration permit. Without having one, travelers are not allowed to proceed with the Amarnath journey. The best time to visit the Amarnath Cave is during the month of July and August when the pilgrimage route is open, and the weather conditions are favorable for travelling. Avoid the journey during monsoon season and in winter months when the area has very bad weather which is not suitable for travelling.

How to Reach to Amarnath Cave

  • The Srinagar Airport is the nearest airport, with domestic flights from all major cities across India. From Srinagar, pilgrims can arrange taxis or use public transportation to reach Pahalgam or Baltal.
  • The buses and private taxis operate from major cities like Srinagar and Jammu to Pahalgam and Baltal. 
  • The closest major railway station is Jammu, which is connected to other nearby cities.

The route from Pahalgam is long and has a distance of around 36 to 48 kilometers, meandering through beautiful valleys and lushly green forests. This route is more slow ascent, making it suitable for pilgrims seeking a less arduous trek. The Baltal route is short and has a distance of about 14 kilometers but has steeper terrain, filled with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
