TheFrames TeamWomen Premier League (WPL) is Women’s T-20 Cricket Franchise in India. It is controlled and operated by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Women’s T-20 Challenge was first started in 2018 as a single match tournament which was played between IPL Trailblazer and IPL Supernovas at Wankhade Stadium Mumbai. It was expanded to a three-team, three-match competition then which was held in 2019, 2020 and 2022.
In October 2022, BCCI decided to expand this Womens’ T-20 Challenge to a five-team tournament and announced that this tournament will be organized in March 2023. They decided to call it as Women’s Indian Premier League; later on 25th January 2023, BCCI officially named it as Women’s Premier League (WPL).
The first season of this tournament will be played in March 2023 in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai from 4th March – 26th March.
WPL structure is based on the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) structure. IPL is the world’s richest and second most valued sports league.
WPL is also known as the sister league of IPL. The structure of the Team and the player acquisition and team composition is also based on the Auction mechanism as that of IPL. The first season auction for WPL will be held in Mumbai on 13th February 2023. Around 409 players from 15 countries are about to participate in the auction. Around 1525 players have done their registrations from all around the world for the WPL auction out of which 246 Indian Players and 163 players from around the world were finalized in the final list for the auction.

Conclusion
In 2018 Women's T20 Challenge was started as a single match tournament. Later BCCI decided to expand it to 3 Team 3 Match which were played in forthcoming years except 2021. In 2022, BCCI decides to expand it furthermore to 5 match tournament which led the origin of Women's Premier League.
